Technical Editing
What is Tech Editing?
A tech editor is the crochet (or knitting) equivalent of a writing editor.
We go through patterns with a fine tooth comb, checking for errors that include: spelling, grammar, stitch count, ease of readability and any inconsistencies in style or voice.
We do not work the item. Instead, we build it in our head or sketch it out.
We use a spreadsheet (or calculator) to calculate stitch counts and ensure accurate maths.
Not all tech editors offer grading services, so make sure you check with your editor if you need this service.
What is the Difference between a Tech Editor and a Pattern Tester?
A tech editor will not work the pattern. Their job to to ensure accurate grammar, spelling, readability and consistency.
Pattern testers work up the pattern to ensure it looks right. They are also useful for finding errors a tech editor may not.
Why Should I Hire A Technical Editor for My Crochet Patterns?
If you are a crochet pattern designer, it is important to hire a tech editor to ensure your patterns are accurate and consistent with your style. No one wants to publish a pattern then get 1000's of messages asking about errors and inaccurate stitch counts. Hiring a tech editor and making use of pattern testers will ensure you deliver the best pattern you can. While it may be an investment up front, you will make your money back with your first few pattern sales.
